UNOOSA-CMSA Select 6 Experiments For China Space Station

On June 12, 2019, at the 62ndconference of the CPUOS (Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space) in Vienna,  the UNOOSA (United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs) and the CMSA (China Manned Space Agency) jointly announced the selection of 6 experiments along with 3 others (with conditional acceptance), onboard the future CSS (Chinese Space Station). The selection was done from 42 applications which were received from 27 countries. The selected applications included from various spheres of space sciences like space medicine, biotechnology, microgravity combustion.

Succeeding a 1st experiment, onboard the Tiangong-2 space laboratory, POLAR-2 will include a group of organizations from China, Switzerland, Germany and Poland, for detecting gamma ray burst polarimetry.

The NUST (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), the INSUF (International Space University in France) and organizations in Belgium and Netherlands plan their topic, tumors in space, to study initial mutational occurring because of microgravity and cosmic radiation using both healthy and malignant human organoids. The selected organizations are thrilled by the chance to conduct leading-age researches which will have global influence and help sustainable development.

The Ambassador and Chinese representative to the UN, Wang Qun, stated that the Chinese Space Station assistance is a clear display of multilateralism supported by China and the IS( International System), with the UN at its center.

Ahead of the declaration, Dr. B. Bowen, a lecturer at the Univ. of Leicester in international relations, stated a series of motivations behind China’s space station’s inauguration to international participation.

He commented that one of the reasons could be Chinese President Jinping’s attempt to maintain, advance, and augment its impressive image in IR (International Relations) and launch China as a rival to the U.S in the field of space and technology and probably superior to Russia. Exposure of CSS to nations other than US is a clear signal to America that there are other nations on the earth, which China can partner with in the Space Technology.
